Sowing
Sowing
Sow in spring, in warmth, between 22 and 25 °C, which is the decisive condition for this tropical species. Below that, germination is slow and erratic.
Use a fine seed compost, only lightly free-draining on the surface. The seeds are small: cover them very lightly, or simply press them onto the substrate. Keep moist without waterlogging, under a cloche or in a mini-greenhouse to maintain humidity.
Prick out individually as soon as the seedlings have two true leaves. Young plants need plenty of light to avoid becoming leggy.
The mature plant
The mature plant
Calea zacatechichi grows into a bushy shrub with oval, toothed leaves. It is sensitive to frost and is grown in a pot, outdoors in summer and brought into a bright room in winter. Its epithet comes from Nahuatl and means bitter grass, which exactly describes the taste of its foliage.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
When should I sow?
In spring, as soon as you can provide a steady 22 to 25 °C. Sowing in full warmth is far more successful than sowing early in a cool room.
What is the difference between the seeds, the plant and the dried leaves?
Three separate products. This listing offers the seeds. The live plant saves you the sowing stage. The dried leaves are collector's plant material.
Do I need a greenhouse?
Not necessarily, but warmth is essential. A heated mini-greenhouse or a warm, bright spot in the house is enough.
Is germination quick?
It requires patience and consistency. Never let the substrate dry out completely during this period.
